Valentine Postcards

Every year I make a few Valentine Postcards for the young people in my life. This year I made some hot glue stencils.

I used these with red paint and a gelli plate to print both positive and negative images.

Fused them to timtex interfacing.
Added some stitching, a backing, more stitching on the edges and then they were done and in the mail. I forgot to take pictures of the finished cards, but I'm sure you get the idea.

These are the socks I finished. Much to my surprise they came out matching. I never try to make them match, but the self striping yarn did it for me.

Also got the binding on the black and white quilt, but I need to get better photos so the stitching shows.

Seventy Days to 70 , #36-42  Last week I had several questions about the milk filters. They are about 4 1/2" round made of an interfacing type material and are white. I've challenged myself to do something to one a day leading up to my 70th birthday. I have to use materials that I have on hand and as you can see I have stuff.

#36 Hand dyed rick rack, fused on
#37 Painted gauze, scrunched and dried on the filter, square beads
#38 hand printed fabric scrap fused, stitching
#39 Origami folded square of hand dyed fabric, filter painted with dyna flow
#40 Painted with Dyna flow, stenciled with Shiva paintstiks
 #41Pan pastels, stenciled, stitched
#42 Textile painted applied with hand carved stamp, french knots

Valentines

Every year I make valentine postcards for some of the young people in my life and this year is no different, although this year I think they were easier than normal and I forgot to take process photos. When I started thinking about what to do, my first thought was of sitting with my youngest Grand daughter and cutting out various sizes of hearts. So thats exactly what I did, I put misty fuse on the back of a red fabric scrap and started cutting out hearts.
They were fused, stitched and will be on the way to the post office later this afternoon.

The Weekly Leaf

Back in the summer of 2012 I wrote an article for Quilting Arts magazines Dec 12/Jan 13 issue on deconstructive screen printing with masks. Then in the spring of 2013 I presented the same thing for Quilting Arts TV season 1200. I made several samples and used the most successful ones in with the article and on the show. One of the less successful ones has been hanging out in my sewing studio's pile of fabrics that I don't know what to do with. I pulled it out and ironed it.

As you can see I only dyed half the background, I think I may have run out of the thickened dye I was using. Using my 6" viewfinder I picked out a section.

Ripped out the piece.
And got ready to stitch.

Valentine Postcards

Every year I make a few valentine postcards for my younger grand children and since it was a snow day when I started making them this year I made a few extra for friends. I stitched a heart shape using french knots and cross stitches, photocopied it and made a thermofax screen.

The original on the left, the photocopy and the screen.

The screen was then used to print on either a pink cotton or some vintage plaid silk with burgundy fabric paint.

The hearts were fused to Timtex and a few more stitches were added in different spots on each one. A backing was fused on and the edges were stitched.

Ready for address and message.

The best part is that I also received some valentines from some of the same friends I sent them to!

The weekly Leaf #6

This leaf was printed with green fabric paint on hand dyed fabric using a thermofax screen. It's a very old screen and I can't remember whether I drew the image or used clip art or a combination of both.

I've also finished quilting the vintage block piece, all that's left is the hand stitching to finish the binding.

Quick and easy Valentine postcards

Every Valentines Day I send Valentine Fabric Postcards to some special young people in my life and I always seem to wait until the last minute to make them. This year was no exception, but they are done. This year I took a piece of white fabric large enough for a few cards and ironed it to a piece of freezer paper. Then out came my Sharpie collection and I drew hearts all over the fabric. Use regular Sharpies, not the ones designed for fabric.
Next I used a brush and brushed on rubbing alcohol, this makes the sharpie marks bleed.
Then apply fusible to the back of the fabric, cut into 4" x 6" rectangles and fuse to Timtex (also cut 4" x 6"). Take them to the sewing machine and stitch around some of the hearts. I also went back in and drew a few more small hearts with the Sharpies.
Fuse fabric to the backs (I used plain white), zig zag around the edges, sign the backs, and they are ready for address and messages, all in less than an hour.
