Playing with black and white and tea bags

I got good news this week, I have a quilt accepted into Artist as Quiltmaker XVII.
White on Black #3
78" x84"
It is one of my favorites and there wasn't room for it in my show in Covallis, so I'm happy it's getting out in the world.

I've been thinking of doing more black and white pieces so this week I played a bit with some small pieces. I had a baggy full of 1.5"squares that where cut up from larger squares of black circles on white. I did these several years ago and then never used them. There was fusible on the backs of all of them so I laid the squares onto a piece of 8"x10"batting and fused them down. Then quilted it.

I like how it came out and am thinking about how to do something of the same idea, but much larger.

The Weekly Leaf
This week I played with some of the tea bag papers I've been saving. I drew some leaves on the paper with a brown ultra fine sharpie.

Colored the leaves with a Derwent Inktense pencil.

Then used a water brush to go over the pencil.

The tea bag was then fused to my fabric with misty fuse. I did turn it over when I fused it so the leaves where curving in the other direction.

  1. Congrats on your piece being accepted. The smaller black & white piece is amazing too! Love the simplicity of it! I had to click on the pictures to enlarge and see up front and personal! Very nice! I am gathering ideas for my 'leaf' project...we had to postpone our sun printing day until Feb. 1st but that's ok...I traced out some leaves from the book ('Fall').

  2. Congrats. Linda…….great news! I’m in a total slump here coping with the aftermath of the car accident…..not only physically but all the other drama involved like getting the car fixed etc. Your post today was inspiring……time to get back in the studio!!!

  3. Kudos on getting into the show. Your piece with the little squares is brilliant. I like the way you connected them all with the quilting lines.
I didn't think the tea bags would hold up to all that stitching, but it looks great.

  4. Congratulations!
I absolutely love the new black and white one.
And the gelli shapes are inspiring. I had an idea for shapes stitched into, but couldn't imagine the best way to do the shape. But now your prints have given me the beginnings of an idea. But plenty of time to think about it because I won't start it for sometime now.

  5. Congratulations on having your piece accepted! The little black and white piece reminds me of graffiti. There is a lot of movement in it.

  6. This years daily focus as barely begun and already you have found a new passion. A return to black and white. I learn so much from studying your work this week. I believe the strength of both your accept work (Congratulations!) and new work is how black dominates in the former and white the latter. Of course both piece have movement. I could study them for hours.

  7. The black quilting lines on the small black and white piece are fabulous! They really soften the edges of the squares and bring the whole thing together. I thought at first it was all painted- what a great project. Definitely it would be cool to see a larger exploration of the idea.

  8. Congratulations! I have been tossing the idea of a weekly leaf for a few months now. You have truly inspired me to do a little something fun everyday with my fabrics and thread. I love doing all my machine work but also find the hand stitching to be very meditative. Love your black and white work.
