SAQA mini conference

Next week I had planned to drive to Bozeman, MT to attend our regional SAQA mini conference, but canceled my plans due to Don's health issues. I did make two pieces for the regional trunk show and got them sent off this week.

2019 Weekly Leaf week 36

An experiment with adding paper. I purchased an old paperback book of plants for the purpose of using in artwork, and I finally used some of it. 

2019 Daily Stitching #4 days 8-14

My plan is to do this entirely in running stitch and to have the leaves end up looking like they are layered. I'm not sure how well it will work, but you don't know until you try. So far I think that I should have used a lighter brighter color for the first leaf since it will be one of the ones that will look like it's on top. But it will stay the color it is because one of my rules for daily stitching is that I never rip anything out.

SAQA Mini Group and Daily Stitching #2 Done

Last Friday four SAQA members and a guest (an artist, but not with fiber) met at my house. We started by spending time in Studio B looking over some of the wonderful artwork in the trunk show.

We ate lunch and had some wonderful discussions about what each of us wanted from the group. Then back out to the studio to play with some indigo.

It was a great afternoon that slipped by very fast.

Over the weekend I came home from my walk with a large handful of leaves, so I had to do some printing. I think I ended up with about 25 prints.

The top row is gelli prints on muslin, the middle row is botanical prints on silk broadcloth that were dipped in indigo at the end of their two hour steam bath and the bottom row is botanical prints on silk broadcloth. Some of these will be used in my weekly leaf series, the rest will go in my stash and they may show up next year in a weekly series.

Back to sewing

This week I started going thru my pile of stalled projects, started cutting up one, decided to quilt another and added a piece to a third one. The third one is actually a long piece of cotton duck fabric that was dipped in indigo. Cut about 20inches off one end and added a pale moon.

Next step will be to quilt it, my plan is to keep it very simple and serene. The finished size will be about 20"H x 48"W, so far it even has a title "Pale Moon Rising".

The second one is black and white squares that were meant for something else that didn't work. I had pieced them together earlier this year and then never did anything else with them. This one is about 40"H x 20"W and doesn't have a name.

The white part has been quilted.

The one that I started to cut up has gone back into the pile.

SAQA has a trunk show every year and the deadline is Nov. 30, so I made a piece for it while I was doing this weeks leaf. I had picked up some ginkgo leaves while walking and put them to work. I used my usual 6"x6"gelli plate for the weekly and my larger 10"x8" plate for the trunk show piece.

Vintage and not so vintage

A few posts ago I showed some vintage blocks that were given to me that I've decided to hand appliqué to a pieced background. The background is a mix of pale  pink, peach, beige and gold hand dyed cottons and some vintage silk drapery samples sewn into large four patches. I'm in the process of basting the vintage blocks onto the four patches and I thought I'd show some of the problems I'm working with. The blocks are all foundation pieced, the foundation is different on each one and sometimes it is pieced. Here are a few samples of the foundation, you can also see the background color of the four patches. The bottom one is thread bare flannel, the middle one is a seam from the original garment the fabric was cut from.

Some of the blocks are going to be quite tricky to appliqué because of the seam locations and fraying edges, like the corner of this block.

I've got about ten of them basted and I still am not sure why I feel compelled to do this project.

I've also  finished my 10' x7" piece for the SAQA trunk show "This is a Quilt". Actually it's the second one, the first one just didn't do it for me. I made pieces for the two previous shows, the first one was made with stapled and rusted silk, the second one was screen printed with sand. This time I used a paper towel that had been a dye rag, a chopstick wrapper and a piece of hand painted silk.

I like this one and enjoyed working with the paper towel. I have a rather large collection of dyed paper towels that are going to be used in upcoming projects.
